Digital Unit Plan Template Unit Title: Exponential Fun with Exponential Functions Content Area: Algebra 1

CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s): 1. Distinguish between situations that can be modeled with linear functions and with exponential functions. 2. Construct exponential functions given a graph, a description of a relationship, or two input-output pairs. 3. Interpret the parameters in an exponential function in terms of a context. Big Ideas: Interpreting exponential functions: Students will learn to interpret the parameters of an exponential function in order to understand the relationship the function is expressing. Applications: Students will see growth and decay, and investment models that exponential functions can represent. Comparing functions: Students will note the differences between functions that they've seen before, such as linear and quadratic, and compare them with exponential functions. Building exponential functions: Students will learn to construct an exponential function given a graph or a set of points.

Name: Oyuki Aispuro Grade Level: 8th-10th

Unit Goals and Objectives: Compare exponential functions to linear and quadratic functions by creating a KWL chart. Apply knowledge of exponential functions through creating a presentation. Reflect and ask questions about exponential functions through exit tickets. Construct exponential functions, given a graph or set of points, using a graphic organizer to guide in each step.

Unit Summary: Exponential functions are very important in the fields of mathematics, physics and economics. Exponential functions are used to model situations where there is a natural occurrence of exponential change, such as population growth. This unit will familiarize students with exponential functions and their applications. Students will compare linear, quadratic and exponential functions and identify which type of situation is modeled by exponential functions. Students will construct exponential functions given a graph or set of points as well as interpret the parameters in terms of context in order to understand the relationship that is being expressed. The unit will consist of many activities, including a KWL chart, webercise, survey, exit tickets, graphic organizer, presentation and exam. Assessment Plan: Entry-Level: KWL Chart Lesson 1 Formative: Webercise, Survey, Exit Tickets, Graphic Organizer Summative: Presentation, Exam

Student Learning Objective: By the end of the lesson, students will interpret and describe applications of exponential functions and determine their parameters.

Acceptable Evidence: KWL Chart is completed and accurate. Student received at least a letter grade C on the presentation of applications of exponential functions.

Lesson Activities: Lecture KWL Chart Presentation

Lesson 2 Student Learning Objective: After completing this lesson, students will have compared linear, quadratic and exponential functions. They will have reflected on what they learned and what questions they have. Acceptable Evidence: Webercise is complete and correct. Exit Ticket includes at least one thing learned and one question. Survey is complete and answers are correct. Lesson 3 Student Learning Objective: Upon the conclusion of this lesson, students will have constructed an exponential function given a graph or set of points. This lesson will also conclude the unit, thus students know all previous material. Unit Resources:

Useful Websites:
Prezi: This website can be used for teacher lectures as well as student presentations and many more various presentations. It is a great alternative to the conventional power point presentation and allows for easy collaboration since it is stored in the cloud. You can start with a template or from scratch. The sign up is quick, easy and free. Pauls Online Math Notes: Here, you can find great notes for many math subjects. The site is very organized and easy contains easy to follow notes. If you find it helpful in explaining the material weve learned in class, you can refer to it even when you have moved on to another math class. Wolfram Alpha: This site is a search engine specific to education. You can search a specific problem or select Examples inMathematics. The site is very well organized for easy navigation through different categories Khan Academy: Khan Academy provides video clips for many topics we will cover in Algebra I class and Geometry class. It is a great site for reviewing material because sometimes you may not understand the way I explain a certain topic; so, it is useful to have an alternate explanation of the same topic 1XL: At 1XL you can find that each subject has its own list of all the skills organized into categories. It is so fantastic because each skill in the list has quizzes so you can practice your skills and test yourself throughout the school year! This will sharpen your skills as well as prepare you for in class quizzes. The site will track your score, and the questions will automatically increase in difficulty as you improve so you learn at your own pace!
