Topic: Use of Problem solving skill to enhance students understanding of mathematical concepts Abstract
In this action research study of seventh grade mathematics, I investigated how the use of problem solving skills facilitates the learning in mathematics for my students. I explore further more whether or not these problem solving skills support students to become an independent problem solver in mathematics. This study aims to explore the views of grade 7 mathematics teacher on the role of developing problem solving skill in mathematics in one the school in Karachi. To gain insight and initiate change, this study employed the action research model (Kemmis, McTaggard & Rettalic, 2004) comprising two cycles. My analysis reveals that while students do not use problem solving skills in their work, when students have the opportunity to use different strategies to solve specific problem such as finding angle from the given different polygon figures they are nevertheless, more likely to explain their thoughts in-depth and go beyond the traditional approach to arrive at a solution. This suggests a value of integrating problem solving skill in mathematics curriculum as it provides a path to students to move towards higher order thinking skill.

My profile: My name is Zehra Habib. I am student of Maters of Education at Notre Dame Institute (NDIE) at Karachi. I am associated with this institute from past three years.
