Making Glass Shader In this tutorial we will learn how to make a glass shader using ramp, anisotropic shaders and sampler info utility. You need a glass model so quickly using curves and revolve create a wine glass. We also need an environment that will reflect on the glass. For this create a polygon box. Go to face mode, select the two front faces and delete them. Now create three point lights as shown in the illustration. Press 7 to see lights effect in the panel.

Now our basic interface is ready. Fire up hypershade. When creating glass material we have to keep in mind three important aspects of it, transparency, reflection and refraction. Drop two ramp shaders, one anisotropic shader and one sample info utility nodes on the hypershade s work area. Rename the two ramp nodes to reflection and transparent and anisotropic shader to glass. You can rename the nodes by Ctrl+drouble clicking on the node. Middle mouse drag reflection ramp shader to glass shader and choose reflection color from the pop up menu, similarly repeat the process for the other ramp and choose transparency this time. Double click on the reflection ramp node and change colors as shown in the illustration, similarly change colors for transparency.

Now drop sampler info utility on the ramp reflection node using middle mouse button. Click on others. A new connection window will pop up; connect Facing Ratio to the V coordinate of the ramp. Likewise again connect Facing Ratio to the V co-ordinate of the transparency node. To get V co-ordinate you have to click on the + sign of Uv Coord. Now you hypershade should look like the illustration. Select your glass and apply glass shader to it.

Double click on the glass anisotropic node and set raytrace options as shown.

Now it is time to make a material for the environment, I just applied a checker map to the surrounding box. Apply material to the box. Now its time to change the render settings. We will use mental ray to render it. Open the render settings window and set raytracing options as shown in the image below.
