Sequences and series

Q-1 The difference between sequences and series :! ! 1- sequences : ! Is a set of numbers which must be in the same order and they do not differ . !

Ex : {1, 2, 3, 4 ,...} is a very simple sequence (and it is an innite sequence) !

2- series : !

Is a set of numbers to work with , which may differ as the problems change . !

Ex : ( 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 ....... ) the sum of the sequences

Q-2 What is a arithmetic sequence ?!

arithmetic sequence is a sequence of numbers such that the difference between the consecutive terms is constant.

Q-3 Deduce a formula that enables you to nd the second term given the rst term !

! An=A1+(n-1)d! ! ! ! ! !

Q-4 Deduce a formula that enables you to nd any term given any term. Showing derivation steps is a must:! ! An=Am+(n-m)d!

! !

Q-5 Write your own arithmetic sequence, specify the rst term and the common difference. Then nd :!

! ! ! ( 3, 8, 13, 18, 23, 28, 33, 38, ... ) ! !

The values of a and d are:! a = 3 (the rst term)! d = 5 (the "common difference")!

! ! ! !

The Rule can be calculated:! Xn = a + d(n-1)! = 3 + 5(n-1)! = 3 + 5n - 5! = 5n - 2 ! So, the 15th term is:! x15 = 5"15- 2 =73 ! ! The sum of the rst 50 terms : !
