Guidelines for Lightening Safety during Practices Warrior Soccer 2013 Athletic participation outdoors is subject to unpredictable weather,

and lightening is common during the months of the high school outdoor season. Lightening-related fatalities or injuries requiring medical attention occur every year. The purpose of these guidelines is to provide a procedure for those responsible for making decisions concerning the suspension or action regarding practices based on the presence of lightening. Recognition: When thunder or lightening is seen, a storm is close enough to strike. Suspend play and direct all athletes, personnel, and spectators to take shelter immediately. 1. Monitor weather patterns- Potential thunderstorms can be previewed by the local weather forecast the day before or morning of participation. Observe the sky by looking and listening for dangerous weather. 2. National Weather Service- Weather can be monitored via a radio such as in a car. Applications on capable devices such as the iPad or iPhone can also provide information. a. Watch- This indicates favorable conditions for severe weather in reported areas b. Warning- This indicates severe weather has been reported and take appropriate precautions Management: 1. Suspension of play criteria a. Lightening or thunder is seen or heard. Fields must be cleared b. Note the time (see 30 minute rule below) 2. Evacuation details a. Soccer Practice field- evacuate immediately inside the satellite sport building b. Soccer Game field- evacuate immediately inside the school c. If a suitable shelter is unavailable, avoid tall objects, utilities, and metal. In an open field if necessary, minimize contact with the ground by crouching down on the balls of the feet. 3. Resumption of play criteria a. 30 minute rule- After recognizing lightening or thunder, wait 30 minutes for complete cessation b. Subsequent lightening or thunder heard after the 30 minute start time requires a reset for the clock. Begin another 30 minute count. www.ihsaa.orgwww.nfhs.org
