COLUMBUSState Senator Nina Turner (D-Cleveland) was named to The Root 100 for 2013, accepting her award at a ceremony yesterday in New York. The annual list, which recognizes some of the nations most significant contributors to American thought and culture, is comprised of African American professionals from a wide spectrum of backgrounds and fields. Also included on this years list were MSNBC host and Tulane University professor Melissa Harris-Perry, Audie Cornish of NPRs All Things Considered, and NAACP President Ben Jealous. I am honored and humbled to have been selected, said Senator Turner. To be mentioned among such a distinguished group of African American leaders is an honor that I could have only dreamed of growing up. Senator Turner, ranking at 47 on the list, is the only state legislator to have been selected this year. Other industries represented include athletics, science, journalism, entertainment, politics, and academia. According the The Roots website, Turner was named to the list for being a fierce advocate for womens reproductive rights and voter access.
