Digital Unit Plan Template Unit Title: Proving Theorems Content Area: Geometry

CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s): Prove geometric theorems. [Focus on validity of underlying reasoning while using variety of ways of writing proofs.] 9. Prove theorems about lines and angles. Theorems include: vertical angles are congruent; when a transversal crosses parallel lines, alternate interior angles are congruent and corresponding angles are congruent; points on a perpendicular bisector of a line segment are exactly those equidistant from the segments endpoints. 10. Prove theorems about triangles. Theorems include: measures of interior angles of a triangle sum to 180; base angles of isosceles triangles are congruent; the segment joining midpoints of two sides of a triangle is parallel to the third side and half the length; the medians of a triangle meet at a point. 11. Prove theorems about parallelograms. Theorems include: opposite sides are congruent, opposite angles are congruent, the diagonals of a parallelogram bisect each other, and conversely, rectangles are parallelograms with congruent diagonals Big Ideas: The big ideas of these standards I want the students to learn in this unit are how to do a proof. I want them to be able to understand where to start and comprehend that they are already given where to end. I would like them to memorize the basic ideas and theorems that they will need in order to prove more complicated ones. Unit Goals and Objectives: When given a theorem about lines or angles, the student will be able to prove it. When given a theorem about triangles, the student will be able to prove the theorem. When given a theorem about parallelograms, the student will be able to prove it. Unit Summary: In this unit, students will explore the world of geometry. They will learn to look at the "how" instead of the "what". Together, we will not only learn the theorems of angles and lines, triangles, and parallelograms, but we will prove why these theorems are valid. We will do so by proving individual theorems step by step in a two column proof. In this unit, students will learn to do things backwards. They will start with the answer and tell me why and how that is the answer. We will work together as we practice writing up plenty of proofs. I firmly believe in a unit like this, practice makes perfect. Students should expect to spend a lot of time in this unit practicing various types of proofs. They will do a webercise activity, participate in other classroom activities with proofs, and work on a project. Assessment Plan: Entry-Level: Review-Matching quiz of the theorems that we will use related to angles, lines, triangles, and parallelograms. This will assess what the students know already and how much we will need to reteach them Formative: Discussion-Lecture then break up into groups and allow students to work together to write up basic proofs to ease them into the proof writing process. Competition- First student to write up a proof correctly to a given theorem gets 5 extra credit points to motivate the students to actually attempt Summative: Group Project-Each group will write up and present a poster proving a popular theorem Group Project-In groups of 3, each person will teach the other two one of the three types of proofs we have gone over in class
