Course 241, Advanced Mechanics Problem Set 14

Problem 1 Find action-angle variables I and for a harmonic oscillator as functions of p and x. Find p and x as functions of action-angle variables I and for a harmonic oscillator. Problem 2 A mass m is hanging on a string which passes through a small ring. Now the mass is put in small oscillations. The ring is slowly moved upwards. Find how the energy of the oscillations changes. Problem 3 A particle oscillates in the potential (see Problem Set 3) U (x) = V , (cosh(a x))2 V > 0.

Find the dependence of the adiabatic invariant I on the energy of the particle and the parameters of the potential. To nd I you would need to make the following changes of coordinates 1 x = arcsinh y , a and then y = V +E 1 , E 1 + z2

where E is the energy of the particle. Finally, the partial fraction decomposition should be used, see e.g. http://mathworld.wolfram.com/PartialFractionDecomposition.html
