Grade: 12 Grade American Government st Period: 1 Block Length: 78 minutes Objectives: J. I want my students to learn about how Congress organizes. Students will be able to: 1. Describe how and when Congress convenes. 2. Compare the roles of the presiding officers in the Senate and the House. 3. Identify the duties of the party officers in Congress. 4. Describe how committee chairmen are chosen and explain their role in the legislative process. K. I want my students to learn about the committees in Congress. Students will be able to: 1. Explain how the standing committees function. 2. Describe the duties and responsibilities of the House Rules Committee. 3. Compare the functions of joint and conference committees. Projector 2. PowerPoint presentation ( opened to first slide) III. Instructional Procedures: A. Portfolio work Chapters 10-12. (20 minutes) B. Lecture notes on Congressional organization and Committees. (25 minutes) C. Work on portfolio primary sources. (25 minutes) IV. Evaluation: 1. Students responses to understanding. 2.
