Day 2 & 3: IWBAT distinguish the difference between plant and animal cells.
Agenda:
4
Plant Cell
Animal Cell
Purpose: ____________________________________________________________________
Hypothesis: _________________________________________________________________
Materials:
2 microscope slides
Tissue
2 cover slips
Iodine Stain
Paper towel
Eye dropper
Microscope
Cheek Cells
Beaker
Toothpick
Water
Procedure:
Part A.
1. Obtain a microscope slide with plant cell on it.
2. View your specimen under the microscope. Draw your observations and record the
magnification.
****Dont forget to add the eyepiece and the objective lens for total magnification
being used.
Questions:
a. Is this a plant or animal cell? ____________
b. What kind of plant is this? ______________
c. Label cell well, cell membrane, chloroplast, nucleus in drawings.
Magnification: __________
Magnification: ________
d. How many cells can fit across the field of view in your first sketch? __________
Return Slide undamaged to Ms. K.
Part B.
6
1. Get a fresh microscope slide and cover slip. Add 3 drops of water to center of slide.
2. Using a toothpick, gently scrape the inside of your cheek and roll the toothpick onto the
water on the slide.
3. Place the cover slip on the slide.
4. Add three drops of methylene blue to the right side of the cover slip. Place a tissue to the
far left of the cover slip to draw the methylene blue across the underside of the cover slip.
5. View your specimen under the microscope. Draw your observations and record the
magnification.
****Dont forget to add the eyepiece and the objective lens for the total magnification
being used.
a. Label cell membrane, nucleus
Magnification: __________
Magnification: ________
b. How many cells can fit across your field of view if your first sketch? _________
Analysis:
1. In part A when you received a piece of plant how do you know it was a piece of tissue
and not a single cell?
________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________
2. What are the differences between the cheek cell and the onion cell?
________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________
3. How did you calculate the total magnification of the view of each specimen viewed?
________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________
4. Explain the purpose of staining the cells with the dyes iodine and methylene blue.
__________________________________________________________________________

Conclusion:
1. Accept or reject your hypothesis and use your data to explain why.
