Use of Present Perfect Progressive Tense and Past Perfect Progressive Tense

This tense is used to describe an action that began in the past, continues in the present and might continue in the future. It is formed by using has/have been and the present participle of the verb (the verb form ending in -ing).

Present Perfect of BE + PRESENT PARTICIPLE (-----ING) Example: Jay is studying English. She started studying in November. Jay has been studying English since November.

2.) The past perfect progressive tense is used to describe a past, ongoing action that was completed before some other past action. This tense is formed by using had been and the present participle of the verb (the verb form ending in -ing).

When the past perfect progressive answers a how-long question, it often uses the words for and since. The past perfect progressive answers how-long questions about the first of two past activities.

ExampleKaren: Before Amy got home, it had rained. Susie: Oh, really? How long did it rain? Karen: It had been raining for 2 hours before Amy got home.
