    ALARMISTclaimsbyextremeGreengroupsandthemisuseofascientificreporttoshutdownAbbot
    Pointsportexpansion,wereexposedasagrossabuseofsciencebyFederalMemberforDawson,
    GeorgeChristenseninparliamentthismorning.
    MrChristensensaidiftheCEOofacompanyweretopublishsuchblatantmisinformationaboutthe
    operationsofanotherorganisationtheywouldbehauledbeforethecourtsand,possibly,jailed.
    HeblastedextremeGreengroupsfordemandingtheAbbotPointportexpansionshouldbestopped
    onthebasisofanewreportondredgedisposalplumes:ImprovedDredgeMaterialManagementfor
    theGreatBarrierReefRegion.
    TheGreatBarrierReefMarineParkAuthority,itself,releasedaninterpretivestatement*to
    accompanythereportthatsaystheriskassessmentsinthestudywereforcomparativepurposes
    onlyandcouldnotbeusedtoassesstheimpactofaparticularproject,MrChristensensaid.
    Theinterpretivereportsaid:Duetobudgetandtimeframeconstraints,andthetechnicalchallenges
    posedbythelargespatialcoverageandtheextendedperiodforsimulation,itwasnecessaryto
    makeanumberofsimplifyingassumptions.Someoftheseassumptions(forexample,no
    consolidationofmaterial,allplacedmaterialisresuspended,andnoresuspensionofsedimentsin
    shallowwater)donotreflectrealconditions,leadingtoalackofalignmentwithexistingfield
    measurements.
    MrChristensensaiditwasadisgracetheextremistswerewillingtohijackanentirelyinappropriate
    reportwhentheyknewitdidnotreflecttherealworld.
    ItisnotsurprisingtheextremeGreenshavenoconcernfortherealworldbecausetheyhavea
    tenuousgrasponrealityatthebestoftimes,hesaid.
    GBRMPAhasspecificallysaidthereportdoesnotreflecttherealworldbutbecauseit
    overestimatesdispersion,theGreensarewillingtomisuseit.
    Theinterpretivereportwasclearonthefailingsofthemodelandthedirectioninwhichtheresults
    areskewed.
    Theseassumptionsresultedinthemodeloverestimatingthedispersionofdredgedmaterialfrom
    placementsitesinboththeamountanddistancestravelled,accordingtotheinterpretivereport.
