Lunar Eclipse
Occurs when Earth is between the sun and Moon. Full moon phase. The moon passes through Earths shadow (umbra). Anyone having night and clear skies can see it. Safe to view.
April 15, 2014: Total lunar eclipse (12:08a.m. 1:23a.m.) Oct 18, 2014: Total eclipse (3:27a.m. 4:22 a.m.)
Solar Eclipse
Occurs when the moon is between Sun and Earth. New moon phase. The moon casts its shadow onto Earth. You have to be in the path of the umbra to experience a total solar eclipse. Use eye protection whenever viewing the sun.
How can the sun and moon appear the same size in the sky? The sun is 400 times bigger than the moon but it is also 400 times farther away than the moon, so the two objects appear to be the same size from Earth.
Solar Eclipse Schedule April 29, 2014: Annular eclipse (path thru Antarctica and Australia) Oct 23, 2014: Partial eclipse (viewable from Nevada)
