This is a timeline showing significant dates in the history of television censorship spanning seventy years from 1934 to 2004. Although this project focuses on the 1950s to todays censorship standards, there is a very significant event that happened in 1934, that needed to be included. Lucile Ball and Arnaz Desi in I Love Lucy

Langston In the 1950s, I Love Lucy was one of the most popular television shows airing but due to the moral standards of the 50s, the tv couple was never seen sharing the same bed. In reality the first married couple to share a bed on a televised program was on Mary Kay and Johnny in 1947. While no complaints were made when aired, televisions shows had since then showed a married couple in the same bed until the 1960s. Kunta Kente in Roots

The above picture is from the 1977 historical drama television show Roots which was derived from the novel Roots: The Saga of an American Family by Alex Haley. Roots follows the story of Kunta Kente, a young man taken from his home in Gambia, West Africa and sold as a slave. Roots was one of the first broadcasted television shows to show full frontal nudity.
