LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE

1. Lesson Plan Information Subject/Course: Religion Grade Level: Eight Topic: Prayer Part 3 2. Expectation(s) Expectation(s) (Directly from The Ontario Curriculum): 1.1 identify the topic, purpose, and audience for more complex writing forms 1.2 demonstrate an understanding of appropriate listening behaviour by adapting active listening strategies to suit a wide variety of situations, including work in groups Learning Skills (Where applicable): - Listening - Writing - Participation - Collaboration - Presentation Name: Mia Robson Date: Feb 25 2013 Time: 1:05-2:05 Length of Period: 1 hour

3. Content What do I want the learners to know and/or be able to do? - I want to continue students learning of prayer - I want learners to know how to write/create a prayer - I want learners to learn strategies to help them pray on their own - I want learners to have knowledge about The Rosary Today learners will: - Participate in a meditation activity - Participate in a discussion about the rosary - Present their personal prayers (they will be handing these in for our class prayer book as well as their reflections) - Create a classroom prayer

4. Assessment (collect data) / Evaluation (interpret data) (Recording Devices (where applicable): anecdotal record, checklist, rating scale, rubric) Based on the application, how will I know students have learned what I intended? I will know that students have learned what is intended with the application of writing a personal prayer and reflection because I will have the chance to observe how they choose to pray and what for, and I will be able to back up or demolish any assumptions using their reflection. I will know that students have learned what is intended with the application of writing a classroom prayer because I will quickly be able to see if the class understands how to pray as a whole

5. Learning Context A. The Learners (i) What prior experiences, knowledge and skills do the learners bring with them to this learning experience? - I want students to bring information from previous lessons about prayer

- I also want students to bring knowledge from their recent confirmation (ii) How will I differentiate the instruction (content, process and/or product) to ensure the inclusion of all learners? (Must include where applicable accommodations and/or modifications for learners identified as exceptional.) Auditory Students who have an auditory learning style will benefit from the meditation activity and listening to prayers out loud Visual Students who have a visual learning style will benefit from seeing the class prayer on chart paper and from the slides about the rosary Kinesthetic Students who have a kinesthetic learning style will benefit while creating the class prayer with their tribe B. Learning Environment - The classroom (split up into the usual 4 tribes) C. Resources/Materials - Brightlinks/Speakers - Powerpoint - Chart paper/markers - Rosary Worksheet

6. Teaching/Learning Strategies INTRODUCTION How will I engage the learners? (e.g., motivational strategy, hook, activation of learners prior knowledge, activities, procedures, compelling problem) I will engage learners using the following meditation activity. This will set the tone for the rest of the lesson. Meditation is another way to connect with God not quite through prayer. Activity: Begin by taking in a deep breath and holding it in your lungs for a moment. Then slowly exhale. Gently release any tension you feel in your body. Now take a second deep breath, and hold it, and exhale slowly. Let go of all thoughts, and all mind activity. Take a third deep breath and slowly exhale. Release all of the energies of the day, and move into a peaceful calm. Keep your mind open and Thought-free. Bring your attention to your Heart. Move your Consciousness deeply into your Heart. Feel the energy of Love, acceptance, and openness. With each and every heartbeat, you allow the Love to pump through you. From this Serene Center of your Being within your Heart, you are able to remember what is real. You are able to recall the Truth of your Being, and your purpose, as Love. From this Serene Center of your Being within your Heart, you are able to recognize God. It's when you move away from the Serene Center of your Being within your Heart that you forget him. You become distracted. Your attention is engaged elsewhere. You are not in a place of remembering. Your purpose here on earth is to remember you are Love. As you move through your day, in every moment, you create opportunity after opportunity to remember God. You are given unlimited opportunities to see God in various forms, various disguises, to see whether or not you indeed recognize God.

When you see through your God-eyes, you easily recognize and connect with the God in all things and all Beings. But when you divert your attention and intention away from God-thoughts and God experience, you drop quickly begin to forget about Love and God. Stay in a place of remembering God and continue to spread your love. For this, we give thanks.

MIDDLE: Teaching: How does the lesson develop? How we teach new concepts, processes (e.g., gradual release of responsibility - modeled, shared, and guided instruction). I will now discuss the rosary and how to pray: Rosary means Crown of Roses. It is said that by praying the Hail Mary you are giving Mary a rose each time. The Twenty Mysteries (Refer to Powerpoint) Joyful Luminous Sorrowful Glorious (Days of the mysteries refer to PowerPoint) Students will be given worksheets to record this information and keep in their religion duotangs Praying the Rosary: 1. While holding the crucifix, make the Sign of the Cross, and then recite the Apostles Creed. 2. Recite the Our Father on the first large bead. 3. Recite a Hail Mary on each of the three small beads. 4. On the next large bead, recite the Glory Be to the Father, the Fatima Prayer "O my Jesus", then announce the first mystery for the current day and recite the Our Father. 5. On each of the following ten small beads (also refered to as a decade) recite a Hail Mary while reflecting on the first mystery. 6. On the next large bead, recite the Glory Be to the Father, the Fatima prayer, announce the next mystery, and an Our Father. 7. Repeat this sequence for each of the following decades (Glory Be, Fatima Prayer, recalling the appropriate mystery, reciting the Our Father, and ten Hail Marys) while meditating on the mystery. 8. After the fifth mystery is completed, the Rosary is usually ends with the Hail Holy Queen, and the Sign of the Cross. Then students will individually present their prayers before handing them into me. (Approx 20 minutes) Students are not being marked on presentation, however I will be taking anecdotal notes on how they present, to refer to when marking their prayer and reflection. Then we will create a classroom prayer. We will do this by giving each tribe a verse (making the final prayer 4 verses long). Each tribe will be assigned a letter from A.C.T.S (Adoration, confession, thanksgiving, supplication) learned in the first prayer lesson. This will give the students a beginning point as well as prevent repetition. I will be floating from tribe to tribe to assist students with their verse.

Consolidation and/or Recapitulation Process: How will I bring all the important ideas from the learning experiences together for/with the students? How will I check for understanding? Their personal prayers bring together ideas from the last two prayer lessons I will check for understanding while marking the prayers and reflections I will also check for understanding with the final classroom prayer

Application: What will learners do to demonstrate their learning? (Moving from guided, scaffolded practice, and gradual release of responsibility.) Learners will demonstrate their learning by participating in their tribe during the process of creating the classroom prayer I will assist students, however they will need to work together to brainstorm ideas and create a final verse (as well as write it out on chart paper). The task requires different roles that can be distributed amongst the students in the tribe.

CONCLUSION: How will I conclude the lesson? We will hang up each verse (on chart paper) of the classroom prayer and pray together as a class. th (I will type this prayer up and add it to the prayer book that will be completed for Monday March 4 )
