Train yourself about rhythms
Finding the right notes on the keys and using matching fngering - that's impor-
tant. But what about the rhythm? What do you do, when do not know a song,
but can only see the notes, or would like to note down a song from the radio,
or a great drum groove that you heard at a concert? If you do not write it down
at the same time as when you hear it, it will quickly disappear into nothingness
and from your mind, making it be drowned out by other experiences. Do not let
music fade like a passing dream, but learn to write it down.
How do you write down a rhythm? Are you aware of the rhythm in the frst
place? Get a feel for the note values, such as a whole, half, quarter and eighth
note, including the rest values.
Security of rhythm you can train yourself for and learn. The basic way is to use
your own body. Tap the note values initially on the white keys on your own pia-
no, or drum it on the table, if you prefer to.
Before playing the frst keys, listen internally to what you want to play, through
this you can develop a musical sense of its sound and rhythm.
Feel the half notes: Before playing imagine you have to put on heavy boots and
stomp slowly along the road. With quarter you feel lighter, and walk an equally
more exhilarating walk, but of course, with lighter shoes on your feet.
