Liquid-Liquid diffusion

Experiment 2 :Liquid Liquid Diffusion

Aim: Determination of the diffusion coefficient for salt in water and its variation with temperature Procedure: In practice a small volume of concentrated solution is placed on one side of the honeycomb, whilst the other side consists initially a large volume of pure solvent(Deionised water) As the diffusion of the solute ocuurs, the concentration within the larger volume increases and is monitored with a conductivity cell and meter !he mi"ture is continually stirred to ensure uniform concentration within the bul# liquid $hilst the conductivity cell may be readily calibrated for any required aqueous system, for introductory studies, dilute solution of sodium chloride are recommended %easure the conductivity at intervals of & minutes until reasonably steady condition of concentration gradient are determined 'alues of (), (* and (+ are then ta#en together with the necessary dimensions after D) for the diffusion of salt in the water are determined !he e"periment shall be repeated with ,-)., ,-&., ,-).. ,a(l and a plot made of variation of D) with concentration

Result: ) * + !he diffusion co efficient of salt in water at concentration () and at room temperature / 00000000000 m*-sec At higher temp (/0000000 .() Diffusion coefficient / 0000000000 m*-sec At higher concentration (* Diffusion co efficient / 000000000 m*-sec
