What is a Static Character?


A static character is a character that experiences little or no inner change.
They stay the same person as they were when we met them.

What is a Dynamic Character?


A dynamic character is a character that experiences inner change throughout the novel.
They grow and develop as the story progresses.

Is static always bad?


We tend to associate being static with being bad.
Can you think of any examples from movies or novels in which being static, or not changing, can be a good thing?
What is the benefit of having a static hero?

Is dynamic always good?


Can you think of an example in which being dynamic was a bad thing?
Is change always a good thing? Can you think of a character that would have been better off staying the same?

What is Direct Characterization?


The writer makes direct statements about a characters personality and tells what the character is like.

What is Indirect Characterization?


The writer reveals information about a character and his personality through that characters thoughts, words, and actions, along with how other characters respond to that character.
