Rieman Reading Response sheet for Brandts Sponsors of Literacy 1. How does Brandt define a sponsor of literacy? (note that there is a specific definition she uses, so please look for it in the article and quote it exactly.) Sponsors, as I have come to think of them, are any agents, local or distant, concrete or abstract, who enable, support, teach, model, as well as recruit, regulate, suppress, or withhold literacy-and gain advantage by it in some way. Pg. 3 2. Using Brandts definition of a sponsor of literacy, think of three sponsors in your own life. Try to think about school, home, community, and institutions as well as people. Remember also that sponsors are not always supportive. They can withhold literacy or keep doors closed to your literacy. Indicate why you think each of these three entities acted as a sponsor to you. My mother, my mom was a 1st grade teacher before my older sister was born. She became a stay at home mom with me and my sister until I was in 3rd grade, she is the person who taught me to read, I remember her reading me novels before bed for as long as I can remember My older sister, 2 years older than me the main game I played as a child was teacher, however I was always the student, my sister helped teach me the alphabet and helped me read my first book, Morris the Moose My first grade teacher, Mrs. Gardener, encouraged me to write, I wrote story after story in her class and I remember her telling me that I better send her the first copy of my book 3. What are at least three of Brandts other primary terms (in addition to sponsor) and how do they apply to you? Rising standard of literacy- being a college student I fell this postcold war intensification in that when I look at my parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, I feel that I am pushed and held to much higher standard than they were Literacy appropriation- I see this appear several times but Im not sure how it relates to my experiences, conservative forces in the history of literacy, growing up in a Christian church I went to Sunday school every morning, reading and memorizing verses was the main reading I did on Sundays Quest for literacy- my grandparents have gotten cellphones, an ipad and a computer try to stay literate with new technology

4. What are implications of Brandts idea of literacy sponsors for your education right now as a college student? UNCC is currently sponsoring me by enabling me to take classes here and further my knowledge. All of my teachers are sponsoring me. All the text books, articles, and papers I have to read and write sponsor my literacy and help me improve. 5. What are any comments/questions you have about this article at this point? I dont have any specific questions as of now. I just feel that I dont fully grasp the entire article. However it was very thought provoking and made me think back to the foundations of my own literacy and how it continues to grow, develop and adapt.
