Aim: SWBAT define equations, classify equations, check equations using substitution

Vocabulary: Equation: a mathematical sentence with an equal sign (=)

Ex: 9+2=1 x + 7 = 37 Non-Ex: expressions 3b+ 4 13 + 5

Open Sentence: an equation with one or more variables Ex: Non-Ex: a + (-3) = 2a + 5 4+3=7

Solution: a value for a variable that makes an equation true

Ex: Non-Ex: t + 2 = 3; 1 is a solution 4 is not a solution

Class Notes: An equation can be either: - True - False - Open Sentence To check if a given value is a solution for an equation, substitute the number for the variable and determine if the resulting statement is true. 1) Is 30 a solution of the equation 170 + x = 200? Yes because 170 + 30 = 200 We Do: 1) State whether each equation is true, false, or an open sentence. Explain. a) 3(b 8) = 12 b) 7 (-6) = 1 c) -9 + 5 = -4 2) Is 45 a solution of the equation 120 + x = 175? 3) Is 12 a solution of the equation 3*(k 5) = 21? Check for Understanding 1) State whether each equation is true, false, or an open sentence. Explain a) 10*5 = 55 b) x + 12 = 15 c) -4 + (-8) = -12 d) 3(4 + 2) = 18 2) Is the given number a solution of the equation? a) x + 5 = 15; 10 b) 3*j = 18; 7 c) 4 + h*2 = 3; -1
