We have Memorial Day off of school, it usually the last Monday of May (point to date on calendar). How many of you celebrate memorial day? Look for raised hands and ask students what they usually do for Memorial Day (anticipated answers: visit the cemetery with family or have family gatherings (typically)). (15 minutes) NEXT Show pictures of men and women dressed in military uniforms, and ask students if they know what these men and women do (show pictures from virtual field trip http://elementaryedresources.weebly.com/memorial-day.html ) Read: America's White Table by: Margot Theis Raven, Illustrated by Mike Benny Show Students the PowerPoint on Link: http://www1.va.gov/opa/vetsday/ Point out this slide specifically, the Wars and soldiers being honored.

(15 minutes) Have students make thank-you cards to veterans for their contributions in protecting our country. Formative Assessment (5 Minutes) At the end of the lesson:

Have students write the purpose of these National Holidays on a post it in their own words. Differentiation For students in need, will be verbally asked to answer the assessment question instead of writing it on the post it. ELL Learners and Visual Learners will be accommodated with the PowerPoint presentation with visuals to get a better understanding of the material. I will also provide an example Thank You Card on the board for them to use when making their own. Kinesthetic Learners will be accommodated by using construction paper to make their cards as well as being asked to show what days these National Holidays fall on our calendar. This way they are placing them and will better remember and understand. Tech Integration SMART board to watch Power Point
