5. READ THIS TEXT AND ANSWER THE

QUESTIONS RELATED

Sicily is an island of 25700 square kilometres in the Mediterranean Sea. There were 5,400,000 inhabitants of the island at the beginning of this year (January 2013). So far there have been 123,000 new children born and 101,000 people have been recorded as deceased (died). What is the population density of the island?

5,400,000 / 25700 = 210,12 inhabitants/km2

5. CONTINUED

Calculate the birth rate

(123,000/5,400,000) x 1000 = 22.77

Calculate the death rate

(101,000/5,400,000) x 1000 = 18.70

5. CONTINUED

What is the natural increase rate? Is it positive or negative? RNI = Birth rate death rate = 22.77 18.70 = 4.07 The natural increase rate is positive so the population is growing What is the current population? (How many people live in Sicily now?) 5,400,000 + 123,000 101,000 = 5,422,000 people live in Sicily now

6. FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS TO PREPARE THIS POPULATION PYRAMID:

Colour women information (right) pink and men information blue. Divide the pyramid into young adults and elderly. Circle the section with more population. Explain how is the population in this country according to this data. This pyramid has a large proportion of adults, and a low proportion of young and elderly people. This is due to an average birth rate and an increase in life expectancy. This pyramid is typical of developing countries.
