Recentsentencingforcrimescommitted duringthe2011Vancouverriotshasstirred discussioninthecommunity.Noteveryone findsthecommunityservedsentences satisfactory.Whenaskedforcommentthe CrownOfficestatedthatcustodialsentences servedinthecommunityarearelativelynew availablesentenceandoftenmisunderstood. TheCrownOfficesharedthatof105adults sentencedtodate,41receivedtraditionaljail sentences.Theremainingreceived ConditionalSentenceOrders.Manycanbe misledbythisstatistic,as98%ofthose sentencedstillreceivedjailtime,althoughthe ConditionalSentenceOrdersmeanmanywill beservingthiswithinthecommunity. The1996CriminalCodeamendment introducedCSOsasapossiblesentence.AnanonymousCrownProsecutorstatesthatthisis partlyduetooverincarcerationinthejailsystem.Whereappropriate,economicand rehabilitationconcernsresultinindividualsservingjailtimewithinthecommunity.TheCrown Officerepresentativestressedthislifealteringsentencecouldserveasafuturedeterrentifits implicationsarefullyunderstood.
