Glaucoma

Glaucoma In Children
By Chelsea Phillips

laucoma is associated with the pressure inside the eye. Congenital glaucoma is

detected within the childs first year. Newborn congenital glaucoma is the most severe and clinically challenging. The signs of glaucoma in babies are unusually large eyes, excessive tearing, cloudy eyes and sensitivity to light.

Caucasians are less likely to have glaucoma than African Americans.

There are two Main Types of Glaucoma

Open-angle glaucoma is caused by slow clogging drainage canals, resulting in increased eye pressure, has wide and opened-angle, between the iris and the cornea, develops slowly and is a lifelong condition, and has symptoms and damage that are not noticed. Angle-closure glaucoma is caused by blocked drainage canals, resulting in a sudden rise in eye pressure, has a closed or narrow angle between the iris and the cornea, it develops quickly, has symptoms and damage that are very noticeable, and requires immediate medical attention.

African Americans are 15 times more likely to have glaucoma. Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness, everyone is at risk for glaucoma, there may be no warning signs and there is no cure for glaucoma (yet).

Five COMMON GLAUCOMA TEST

1. Tonometry measures the pressure in the eye 2. Ophthalmoscopy helps the doctor examine the optic nerve for glaucoma damage 3. Perimetry is a visual field that produces a map of the complete field of vision 4. Gonioscopy is a diagnostic exam that helps determine whether the angle where the iris meets the cornea is open and wide or narrow and closed 5. Pachymetry is a simple, painless test to measure the thickness of the cornea

What to Expect
Expect the children with glaucoma to be just like any other child their age. Thousands of children with glaucoma live full lives. The ultimate goal of glaucoma management is for the child to be independent and participate in their own self-care.

There is no cure for glaucoma but early detection is important. Glaucoma in children is commonly hereditary. Children should have their eyes checked as early as two years of age.
