School of Animal Biology Required milestones for new PhD students The University has a process for formal

Confirmation of Candidature for PhD students, whereby all new PhD candidates are enrolled provisionally for the first year. Formal Confirmation of Candidature after the first year is conditional on the candidate completing agreed tasks within an agreed time. The tasks and timeframe will be agreed between the candidate, supervisors and School, and the agreed tasks and timeframe are to be listed in the Research Proposal, to be approved as part of the Proposal. The candidates first Annual Progress Report will include a report of progress on these tasks. Required milestones for first-year PhD students in Animal Biology Event Completion of Animal Biology safety induction Presentation of Proposal Defence Seminar to School (including meeting with review panel) Preparation of research budget Approval of Research Proposal by internal Review Panel Approval of Research Proposal by Graduate Research School Completion of review of literature (this can be part of the Research Proposal) Completion of relevant safety courses (e.g., radiation safety, 4-wd) -- specific requirements to be determined for each candidate Completion of appropriate coursework, if required (to be determined for each candidate) Submission of applications for necessary permits (e.g., animal ethics, collecting) Timing Within first few months Approximately five months after start (before formal submission of research proposal) Within six months after start, to be included with Research Proposal After proposal seminar, and before submission of proposal to Graduate Research School Within six months after start Within six months after start, if part of Research Proposal; otherwise at an agreed time Within first year
