    The graph shows the maximum population of Asian elephants in several countries from 1994 to 2007. In most countries, the elephant population declined significantly over this period. The steepest drops were in Malaysia and Thailand, where elephant numbers fell to less than half of 1994 levels. India still had the largest elephant population, but it also declined sharply to around 3,500 by 2007. China had a very small population of at most 500 elephants. Elephant populations in Laos and Vietnam remained relatively stable at around 1,200. The only country where elephants may have increased was Cambodia, where numbers rose by up to 200.
