Yeti Crab VS Giant Oarfish

A presentation by James Ruopeng Yang

Yeti Crab

VS

Giant Oarfish

Taxonomic Description
You guys are probably wondering what these creatures are. For starters, here is a taxonomic description of both animals. Kingdom: Phylum: Subphylum: Class: Order: Family: Genus: Species: Biological name: Yeti Crab Animalia Arthropoda Crustacea Malacostraca Decapoda Kiwaidae Kiwa K. hirsuta Kiwa hirsuta Giant Oarfish Animalia Chordata Vertebrata Actinopterygii Lampriformes Regalecidae Regalecus R. glesne Regalecus glesne

Habitats-Yeti Crab
Although these two animals both live in deep water, their habitats are very different. The first yeti crab was located at about 900 miles south of Easter Island in the South Pacific Antarctic Ridge. It was discovered at a depth of 7,540 feet (2,300 meters) near hydrothermal vents that release toxic chemicals that are fatal to most other animals.

Habitats-Giant Oarfish
Oarfish spend most of their time at depths of 3300 ft (1100 m). They live in all oceans but giant oarfish are most common in tropical regions. Although deep water in tropical regions are their natural habitat, there have been several sightings of dead oarfish in very shallow areas. It is presumed that oarfish may swim to the surface or shallow areas when they are sick or dying.

Winner of this Round

Yeti crab wins this round because of its ability to survive and thrive in an environment that most animals would die in 10 seconds.

Diet-Yeti Crab
Yeti crabs are general carnivores although it is theorized that one of the three species farm bacteria on their bacteria on their setae (resembling fur) which would explain the crabs waving their arms through the water. (to collect bacteria if you didnt pick up on that)
A yeti crabs diet consists of: -deep sea vent shrimp -deep sea vent mussels -algae (theoretical) -bacteria (theoretical)

Diet-Oarfish
Giant oarfish are also a carnivore is also carnivores but unlike the yeti crab, the giant oarfish does not have a steady supply of food considering its size. A giant oarfish diet consists of: -krill -small squid -small fish -other small crustaceans

Winner of this Round

Its yeti crab again! In its habitat there is a huge amount of food in its habitat. Compared to the giant oarfish who does not have as much food considering its huge size.

Unusual/Interesting Characteristic -Yeti Crab

The Yeti crab is famous for its blond setae (resembling fur). Its fur contains bacteria, which neutralizes the toxic minerals from the hydrothermal vents. It is also theorized that the yeti crabs farm bacteria on their setae, saving it for later consumption. The setae makes the yeti crab look furry, earning the the yeti crab its unusual name.

Unusual/Interesting Characteristic -Giant Oarfish

If you ever meet a giant oarfish in real life, you will realize that giant isnt a word big enough to describe the massive size of the giant oarfish. The giant oarfish can grow to lengths of at least 50 feet if not dying of sickness or fatally injured. That means an oarfish can grow to a length of at least of the Behemoth! (a ride in Canadas Wonderland) This explains the legends of sea serpents that tore apart boats. Actually, this animal is quite harmless to humans but anyone would be frightened if they saw a 100 foot long fish, looking like a sea serpent as in sea snake.

Winner of this Round

Its a tie! They are so different, but are just as advantageous as the other!

Winner Overall
Yeti Crab Points 3 Giant Oarfish 1

Yeti Crab is the Winner!
