Ry aT 0181 Chief Editorial In the modern age af information and communication, the distance among the countries has become less. People are overwhelmed with the curiosity of knowing the culture. civilization. religion and social customs of ther countnes, but mistimum linguistic knowledge is a hinderance to it The transa CU pinactig Divya Divan) of Lord Mahavir wes omndinguistic in character but religious and spiritual leaders of Jain Sangh (Acharyas) created abundant literature in the respective regianal spoken languages of their regions. For a long time, the Jain literature had been written in ‘Prakiit’ & ‘Sanskrit’ languages, which was accepted by contemporary people in general. Afterwards, it was written In Apabhransha and Kannada In the | 7th and 18th century, the literature was written by the regional |earned Bhattarakas and Pandits in ‘Dundari’, the language of Rajasthan, also. In the 20th century, the Hindi translation of the num- ber of the original scriptures of Prakrit, Sanskrit and Apabhransha lan- guages was presented abundantly and by this means the knowledge con- tained in our scriptures was revealed to the people in general, tn this direction, Manikchand Jain Granthmala-Mumbai, Jain Sanskriti Sanrakshak Sangh- Solapur, Bharatiya Gyanapesth- Dedhi, Jain Sangh-Mathura and Digambar Jain Trilok Shodh Sansthar-Hastinapur have done a lot of praise-wonhy work. By the attempts of mary brilliant persons like Barrister Champat Rai Jain, Justice JL. Jaini, Babu Kamta Prasad Jain, Pandit Sumerchanda Diwakar, Dr, A.N. Upadhye etc, the Iterature was also written in English fanguage, the one which is mostly used in many parts of the word But due to the complexity of Jain terminciogy and the lack of similar ity in its English translation by different leamed persons, this task had become more complicated. At one end, due ta the migration of Jain followers to American and Eurepian countries, the need of revealing the differant aspects of Jain philosophy and literature in English language in simple and easily under- Standable style was being experienced & at the other end, for the arigina- tion of such literature in the new style, a prime need was being exped- enced for the compilation of an up-to-date Jain Dictionary, so that there may $e uniformity and clarity in the English terminology of Jain literature, ILhas also been experienced many times that number of aspirant trans- lators and leamed persons become disinterested in such type of work due to the unavailability of authentic English terminology of Jaln words, [18] consequently the Jain world remains deprived of the great compositions. This is the great joss of Jainism and Jain literature. The English speaking forgigners are also deprived of the great Jain philosaphy. In such 2 situa- tion. Veer Gyanodaya Granthamala, which is established under Digambar Jain Trilok Shoch Sansthan, on the inspiration of Param Pujya Ganinipramukh Acyika Shri Gyanmati Mataji, to publish ancient books of Digambar Jain tradition and their commentaries, short religious books in different languages, dramas and books of Paoja-Vidhan (worshippings), tonk up a chailanging task of compiling such a dictionary in which specialised meaning of Jain terminologies could be found in Hindi & En- glish both languages. Firstly, the inspiration for such a compilation was given py Pujya Ganinipramukh Atyika Shri Gyanmati Mataji at the ime of executive meet- ingvof Tithankar Rishabhdev Jain Vidvat Mahasangha at Deihi in July 2001 and the extraordinary academic interest, discussions and continu- ous guidance of most venerable and learned Pragya Shramni Aryika Shri Chandnamat! Mataji, the d ee? Shri Gyearciati ab, Gave a iota complete this work earnestly and under her guidance & with her vaiuable attempts in this direction, on the occasion of 2600th birth anniversary of Lord Mahavir, a detailed project was prepared and the collection of mnate- rial and the analytical work was started from ist October, 2001. Before the campilation of this dictionary, some other attempts have also been made in this direction, some of them are as follows- 1 Jalna Technical Terms, Dr. Mohanlal Mahta, Pune (M.S.). 2 Glossary of Jaina Terms, Dr. N.L. Jain. Rewa (MP). 3. Sudha Sagar Hindi-English Jaina Dictionary, Or. Ramesh Gnand Jain, Bijnor (U.P), In all these attempts, there seems a lack of proper Hindi-English de- scriptions, that's why we have expressed essential definitions of wards in Hindi & English both languages in our dictionary. For this compilation, with (he use of above dictionaries sometimes, we have used the following hooks abundantly- Jainendra Siddhanta Kosha, Part-1,2,3.4,5 Tattvarth Sutra (English varsion)-Justice J.L. According to Jainism, the universe is not guided by any supreme authority or God but each soul is the Doer (Karta) & Enjoyer (Biokta) of own Karmas. When the soul destroys all its Karmic entity, it elevates to the Siddha-Shifa or Moksha, where it remains engrossed in infinite bliss for all tes to come. Complete or partial renouncement of physical, mental or vocal vialence is specially mentioned for Jain followers. in the present age, the first Tirthankar was Lord Rishabhdev and the 24th Tirthankar was Lord Mahavir, who gave the immortal principle of “Live & Let Live" to the world. Lord Mahavir was born to king Siddharth and Trishia on Chaitra Shukla Trayodashi at the Kundalpur city of Bihar state 2600 years ago. That Kundalpur Nagai was specially glorified with the showering of jewels for 15 months & divine tirth-festival at the time of the birth of Lard. The names Veer, Vardhman, Sanmati & Mahavir were attributed to Him at Kundalpur. Mahavir, a celibate since childhood, accepted Jaineshwan Deeksha at the age of 30 years being detached fram the word. He performed hard penance for {2 years. He was honoured with the name ‘Mahati Mahavir’ by equanimously enduring the harsh atrocities made by Rudra at Ujjaini. By compiling many words of this-English Tattvartha Sutra in a note book, | arranged then alphabetically also. Later 1 went through the English translation of the ‘Sarvarthasiddhi Teeka’ (a commentary book) and by reading this [ was very pleased that many writers had rightly used their knowledge of English language. Thereafter going through many books of Jain Iiterature written in English by Barrister Champatrai Jain, Pandit Sumerchandra Jain Diwakar, Dr. Manikchand Jain (Khandwa) and Shri J. L. Jaini ete. 3 felt great pleasure. But whenever | read them, ! had to take the help of Dictiu- nary, therefore, | feit a great need of a Dictionary of Jain terminology. Beacuse of my academic background only upte 10th standard, | was not having good command over English, but due to my own interest, | had been endeavouring for this and this was the reason that | firstly composed worshipping hymns In Engjish in 1990 on Ganini Shri Gyanmsti Mataji, in 1992 on Lord Mahavir and in 1997 on Lord Rishabhdew. All these compo- sitions written in simple English were appreciated by devotees and this increased my enthusiasm. So, ! started to compose religicus hymns and other ‘iterary work in English. As | had to find words more often from General Dictionary in all these works, my wish bacame stronger that there should be a special Hindi to English Dictionary for about whole Jain termi- nology so that we may use the words appropriately in the English transla- tlon of Jain IHerature, Sesides this. | noticed that now-a-days while doing the English translation, same translators translate even the Proper Nouns or Names also, as ‘Luminous’ for Dhavia (fT), “Victorious Luminous’ for Jai Dhavia (ragqaet), ‘Octad of Thousand! for Ashtsahastri {amceect), ‘Sun for the lotus of the objects of knowledge’ for Prameya Kamai Martand (maeneramdt), ‘Garlands of Victory’ for Jaimala (amen) etc. but itis quite possible that by such a method, the reader may understand the opposite [293 meaning at the place of the real one, So such type of translation does not seem fully appropriate In other words, if the name ‘Gyanmati' is written as ‘Koowledge-Mind’ and the name ‘Chandnamati is written as ‘Sandal-Mind’, how can these iwo personalities De acknowledged? The denoting of Prakash Chandra’ with ‘Light Moon’ is not only to be laughed but it also fails to introduce one with that particular person. In fact, the explanation of a name can be made describing the qualities according to it (the name) but the name can not be translated. For example, in the English translation ef Tatvartha Sutra, Justice JL Jaini (1956) has given the basic Sutras (formulae) in Raman soript al the place of thair English transiation. The similar pattern is seen in the scriptures of Sanskrit, Prakrit and Hindi commentaries also. The tradition of changing the original Sutra by translation is not noticed anywhere, otherwise the entity of fundamental Sutras written by Acharya Kund-Kund, Acharya Uma Swarm, Acharya Samantbhadra etc. would have been threatened till now. Similacly, | found that at @ aumber of places the word ‘Jain Monk’ has been used for a ‘Jain Muni’ and ‘Jain Nun’ far an “Aryika’ However the use of ‘Jain Saint’ or ‘Jain Muni’ and ‘Female Jain saint’ or ‘Jain Sadhwt appears better. The reason is that the word ‘Monk’ is especially used for a Bauddha Shikshuk and 'Nun’ for a Christian sadhyi. Thus, all these s* aings. ive FG Sete di sof the compilation of such & dictionary which is fully authentic and the meanings given in which, are broadly useful & unanimously accepted. The Time was passing gradually and the vittar (Padyatra) of aur Sangh (group) had been going on, Meanwhile, | requested Pujya Ganini Aryika Shri Gyanmati Mataji, my spiritual teacher, that there is the great need of a Jain Dictionary for tha present generation. Upan this, She expressed her consent with happiness. In this way, on the event of 260Cth birth cer- emony of Lord Mahavir, | started the compilation of this dictionary with proper planning. For a long period | did it but due to the lack of time & complications in the work, it seamed to be a quite lengthy Project to be completed on my own. To complete the work as early as possible we thought of having some co-operation and so In this concern, whole plan- ning of the compilation of the dictionary, was explained to Dr, Anupam Jain, Indore and | expressed my wishes to complete it by the 25th of April 2002, the concluding day of the 2600th birth ceremonial year of Lord Mahavir. | was pleased that Anupam got this work started immediately with his capable associates specially Jeevan Prakash Jain (Indore} & Komal Chand Jain (Indore). During this period | alse went through other Jain 30] Dictionaries, which seemed to be prepared agcerding ta the need of time but our conception of compiling ‘Lord Mahavir Hindi-English Jain Dictio- nary’ became stronger so that such 4 new dictionary, which is fully impar- tial & broad in meaning and containing near about the whole Jain terminolgy. may be presented to the society. And so this simple looking task became harder & lengthy and ultimately this could be compieted in the year 2004 by starting form year 2001 i.e. in 3 years. The Veetna of this Grantha was done firstly between the (fares of the year 2002 at Tirthankar Risnhabhdev Tapasthali Prayag Tith (Allahabad) and then in the year 2003 from 18th June to 2nd July at Kundalpur (Nafanda} in the auspicious presence of Pujya Ganini Mataji. Suitable corrections & alterations etc were made and after giving proper directions, the next Vechnea was settled for Oct-Nov. 2003. Sessions of deep disussion & rethinking again started at Nandyavarta Mahal campus. Kundalpur (Nalanda) from 10th November 2003. In this way, we were observing continuously all the activites of this compilation, Maximum of my time except that far my dally essential duties of ARYIKA life, started to be utilized in the Vacfaa of the dictionary, Pujya Ganini Mataji used to pay attention to each werd with full interest as far as possible. She used to consult various scriptures for particular words and by (elling the exact scriptural meaning of the words. used to confirm the authenticity of the dictionary at each step. Jeevan Prakash, Komal Chandji & Sanghastha Br. (Km.} Swati Jain used to co-operate in English tranetation aiong with the Vochna. We worked hard day & night and upto 29th Jan 2004 whole of the dictionary was passed through the gateway of correction- addition-deletion etc. of the words along with the rechecking of he checked words in June 2003, The series of red marks almost in all the pages was indicating that it was not the correctlon but the alteratlon but the actual fact was that by the consultation of Pujya Gyanmati Mataji, scripture based factual explanations of various words had been obtained even when the previous writtan maanings were also correct and this added to the authenticity of the dictionary multiple times. The atmosphere of the whole Sangh had been fully diverted towards the dictionary because of the thought process, mutual discussion, consultation of ancient scriptures atc. activities every moment for the words. checked on that day. Only the stars like words had been dispersed all around in the sky of mind, infact the great delight of my heart on floating in the stream of vast knowledge, is beyond description. |t was the unique golden opportunity of my life. A number of times | used to think that when even some drops of true knowledge are obtained. a lot of satisfaction, happiness & inner joy accompany it, then how itis possible for anybody in [32] 3 Loks to measure thn wnlemied inner bapoiness af the Omniscient Lord owing to His Enlightenment (Kevaigvan), Well! before the finalization of the matter of the dictionary, | was desirous of getting through the full contents ange again, so accordingly | started this work afte: Mahavir Jayanti, 3rd Apr. 2004. This time, | read each word of every page and changed the exptanations at a number of places by discussing with Pujya Gyanmati Mataji. But as it is impossible te count the stars of the sky, similarly it was not possible also to discuss each & every word with Pujya Mataji so there may remain some corrections at certain places even now. As a matter of fact, when discussion & needed corrections are made repeatedly, only then a fully authentic dictionary can be presented before the society. We are fully hopeful that efficient readers will surely intimate us about the corrections wherever needed ‘To say anything for he beneficence of Pujya Ganini Mataji is an act of offering the holy water cf Ganga back to Ganga. Therefore, taking it as a precious treasure of Jain-discipline, corrected by her presence & inspiration, we are presenting this holy Dictionary to the society. By getting its benefit, if all of you get it evaluated by your coming generation, we will take it as our useful attempt. Time to time Kshullak Motisagar]i Maharaj has also co-operated by his valuable guidance and suggestions, it is the symbel of his religious interest. Karmayogi Br. Ravindra Kumar Jain, the editor of Veer Gyanodaya Granthmala and the President of Digambar Jain Trilok Shodh Sansthan, Jambudvip-Hastinapur, has made it widely useful by presenting his timely suggestions alongwith bearing the responsibility of the compilation and publication of this dietionary. As this work had been started with the wew of finishing it shortly, fut it took much dime than the estimated target 50 this has certainly become more expensive. Even so, Ravindra Ji has shown great patience in its completion and that is the mark of his longsightedness. Infact the gaiden chances of the publication of such standardized comp+ lations are rare and definitely by its publication Digambar Jain Trilok Shodh Sansthan will get more international fame. In preparing this distlonary, the co-operation of Jeevan Prakash Jain and Komalchand Jain, which they have given to Dr. Anupam Jain, is ap- preciable and for it | greatly bless them and wish ihat they may acquire Spiritual merits by always bestowing their bast co-operation in widely Spreading Jinvani, Inthe same way Sanghastha Br. (Km.) Swati Jain (M.5¢.-Biosciences}, accepting the orders of Pujya Mataji, has also taken part diligently in the teading and discussion session of the dictionary and she has contributed her general knowledge of English in the translation of religious terms and [32] got the English words rectified, | blass a Jot to her hoping that she will al- ways be serving Jinvani with greal success in achteying her goal My hearty Dlessings are there for Anupam ji and my inspiration for fim is that as he has been attached with Pujya Mataji and institution since 1980 as an earnest disciple, In the same way he may always be bestow- ing his co-operation to the institution forever by venerably accepting the orders of Puiya Matai | am feeling great pleasure in presenting this dictionary in the auspicious hands of Pujya Ganini Pramukh Shri Gyanmati Mataji, the spiritual leader on the path of Lord Mahavir. In the accomplishment of such reverential deeds the patronage of Jain religion and the great blessings of saints are the only prime support a and these may always be acquired in future also, with these sentiments...............
