The Mission of the Office of Service-Learning


The Office of Service-Learnings (OSL) mission is to engage regional communities, the university, and its student body in a mutually beneficial, innovative learning and service enterprise for the purpose of mobilizing knowledge, talents, and energies to benefit the greater community.

Our Background
Established in February 2010. In July 2012, The Office of ServiceLearning moved under the direction of the Center for Academic Success Programs (CASP). o CASP is focused on enhancing teaching and promoting student learning through collaborative, effective research-based programs. The program strategically aligns with the goals of Western Michigan University o Learner-Centered o Discovery-Driven o Globally Engaged

Student Benefits
We work to create a program that engages students and instills leadership skills for nonprofit organizations and corporations alike. Student benefits include, but are not limited to: An opportunity to indentify and dissect biases and stereotypes where empowering and building a new framework for understanding is crucial. Contributing to a culture of innovation and unconventional thinking Enhancing work-force development and students employability through applied learning and real life experience. Encouraging civic engagement and social responsibility, and decreasing effects of current cultural and political apathy.

What We Strive To Accomplish


Serving as a campus resource to facilitate and implement service-learning and community-based co-curricular learning. Matching academic and professional development with needs identified by the community for the purpose of practical and professional experience. Coordinating activities between, and building community among WMU service-learning stakeholders. Giving students opportunities to engage with sites that stimulate experiential learning and workforce development.
