Anatomy
For IV injection a recently sited and patent IV cannula should be used to ensure correct route of administration directly into the venous circulation. Usual sites for IV cannulation are: Cephalic vein and tributaries in the forearm Dorsal venous network in the back of the hand Antecubital veins including basilic, cephalic, and median cubital veins Long saphenous vein (for exceptional use only).

When setting up an infusion use a cannula site away from a joint surface or dependent part.
