Technique - intravenous injection

A standard technique for administering an IV injection into an in situ IV cannula, is shown in the animation.

Procedure
1. Identify the site for injection into a recently inserted IV cannula 2. Firstly, ush the cannula with sterile normal saline to ensure that the cannula is correctly placed and the lumen is patent. Open the injection port on top of the cannula and push the syringe into position and ush the cannula by injecting 3-4 ml

of sterile normal saline If the cannula does not ush easily, re-site it in an appropriate position (see IV cannulation) Check the vial contents and draw up the medicine with a blunt ltering needle Expel any remaining air from the syringe and dispose of the drawing up needle into a sharps bin Open the injection port on top of the cannula and push the syringe into position Slowly inject the desired quantity into the cannula, with strict adherence to the manufacturer's guidelines and formulary protocols When the injection is completed, remove the syringe from the cannula and replace the cap over the injection port Remember to document and sign for all medicines that you have administered

Tips
In general, do not interrupt essential infusions to give an IV injection If it is necessary to temporarily stop an infusion running into the cannula to give the injection, be sure that the cannula is ushed before and after giving the injection, and be especially careful to restart the infusion at the correct rate If the substance for injection and the infusion medicine are incompatible then use an alternative cannula for the IV injection Some medicines must be given in small aliquots depending on the response to the drug, so always inject slowly while observing for effects and only give the amount required which may not be the full contents of the syringe
