The increase of the consumption of energy-dense foods that are high in fat and sugar but low in vitamins, minerals and other healthy micronutrients.

sedentary, which means they burn fewer calories and are more likely
to gain weight.

Genetics

If a child was born into a family of overweight people, they may be genetically predisposed to

the condition, especially if high-calorie food is


readily available and physical activity is not encouraged.

Health Effects of Childhood Obesity

Obese youth are more likely to have risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure.

Obese adolescents are more likely to have diabetes, a condition in which blood glucose levels indicate a high risk for development of diabetes.

Children and adolescents who are obese are at greater risk for problems such as sleep apnoea, stigmatization and poor self-esteem.

Prevention

Healthy lifestyle habits, including healthy eating and physical activity need to be supported by all the social sectors .

Promoting the increase of taxes on junk foods and encouraging the consumption of healthy foods.

Schools also should provide opportunities for students to learn about and practice healthy eating and physical activity behaviors.
