REFLECTION PAPER

In this lesson I chose to use a bar graph and a line graph. I think at the elementary level these particular graphs are easier to comprehend. This lesson integrated technology with Mathematics and allows the students to visually see the difference in 4 different bas of M&Ms At the beginning of the lesson the students can make predictions about the distribution of the 6 different colors of M&Ms. When I opened the first bag the colors were pretty evenly distributed so I thought maybe a machine counts them out but by the time I got to the fourth bag I could clearly see that they were not being counted out. I think this will show the students that predictions can be prove true or false and the most important part is the process of doing the graph to find your answer. I think by allowing the students to help create the charts they will gain the knowledge of Microsoft Excel and learn about technology the same way the teacher is learning. This lesson begins with classification of the M&Ms by placing them in groups according to their colors then they need to graph each bag in order of how many of each color there are. Showing the students the two different kinds of charts will allow them to see that graphing can be done in many ways using the same data. They should know that they can use whichever way they are most comfortable with because they will lead to the same answer because they contain the same information. Using the graphs will allow them to solve problems visually by just looking at the graphs and not having to do any calculations. This will make the children more confident in technology and in themselves for knowing how to use it to their benefit.
