Beirut Arab University CIVE 453: Structural Steel Design (I) Assignment #5

Dept. of Civil Engineering FALL 2012-2013 Due: November 16 -2012

Problem 1 On a graph paper, plot the following curves: a. Fcr versus kl/r for Fy = 2.4 t/cm2 b. Fcr versus kl/r for Fy = 3.6 t/cm2

Problem 2 Compute the design compression strength (Pn) for each of the following columns.

Problem 3 Compute the design compression strength (Pn) for each of the builtup columns shown below. Assume the column is 7.5m long, pinned at one end and free to translate at the other end in the X-plane, and braced at its ends and one-third height against buckling in the Y-plane. Use St 52.

Problem 4 Y An axially loaded column in an industrial building is subjected to service compressive loads PD = 150 tons and PL = 80 tons. Choose the lightest HE shape (HEA or HEB) to carry the factored axial compressive load. The column is part of a braced frame and may be assumed to be pinned at the top and bottom of its 8 m length. The column has a lateral support at its mid-height against buckling about its weak axis. Problem 5 For each of the following frames, compute the effective length factor k for in-plane buckling of column A. Use the alignment chart. All beams are IPE 400, and all columns are HEA 240. All members are oriented for strong axis bending in the plane of the frame.

Problem 6 Refer back to problem (6) in Assignment (3), it is required to: a. Design the upper chord member U1U2 as a pair of angles (backto-back) bolted to a 12mm gusset plate between the angles. b. Design the diagonal member L1U1 as a single angle bolted to a 12mm gusset plate. Use St 37 and bolts M16mm.
