Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution Rice procurement to start from 22nd September EXPORT OF ONLY

PUSA 1121 VARIETY OF NON-BASMATI RICE ALLOWED 15:59 IST The availability of rice in the country in the current year has been reviewed by the Government. The harvesting of paddy crop is likely to start from 1st week of October onwards. On the request of Government of Haryana the procurement of paddy has been preponed to 22nd September, 2008. Paddy procurement in Punjab has been preponed to 29th September, 2008. In several parts of the country there is a possibility of some damage to paddy crop due to recent floods and assessment of the same is being made in consultation with the State Governments. On the request of Government of Haryana, export of PUSA 1121 variety of nonbasmati rice has been allowed. Presently, there is no proposal under consideration before this Department for lifting ban on export of any other varieties of non-basmati rice. The progress of paddy and rice procured in Kharif Marketing Season (KMS) 2008-09 and based on the open market price of rice and availability in different parts of the country, a decision will be taken on continuation or lifting of ban on export of rice.
