Number of pumps
Our Second criteria was number of pumps it takes to empty one bottle of hand soap. To test this
criteria we emptied one bottle of each hand soap one full depression at a time. One full
depression was from a resting state until the pump could not depress any further. All three soaps
were pumped from a sitting position, i.e. not tilted. Each brand had different pump mechanisms,
so one pump from each was a different amount dispensed. We started with each hand soap
having one full pump already used. We tested the Softsoap first, then the Dial, and finally the
Ivory.
We kept track of the results in tally form, marking five tallies at a time after five pumps. At first
glance we found each pumping mechanism to be of different length, this could account for the
different amount of soap pumped by each. All three soaps contained the same amount of liquid,
so the difference in number of pumps can easily be accounted to the pumping mechanism.

Results
The criteria we used to test each brand of soap included:
Ivory: Ivory was priced at $1.59 for 7.5 Fluid Ounces. There were 197 pumps in the bottle.
After lathering the soap for 1 minute it took 7 seconds to rinse completely.
Dial: Dial was priced at $1.89 for 7.5 Fluid Ounces. There were 129 pumps in the bottle. After
lathering the soap for 1 minute it took 8 seconds to rinse completely.
SoftSoap: Ivory was priced at $1.69 for 7.5 Fluid Ounces. There were 153 pumps in the bottle.
After lathering the soap for 1 minute it took 10 seconds to rinse completely.
