of Lesson: December 03, 2013 Whole Class___ Small Group__

Standards/Benchmarks/GLEs 3.MD.3 Draw a scaled picture graph and a scaled bar graph to represent a data set with several categories 49. Describe climate patterns from recorded weather conditions over a period of time (ESS-E-A4) (GLE) OBJECTIVES: TSW calculate the average rainfall for various cities in Louisiana TSW use calculated data to create a digital bar graph. INTRODUCTION/ANTICIPATORY SET/SET INDUCTION/FOCUSING EVENT TTW ask the students if they know what it means to take the average of something. TTW will call on students to answer then provide an example of an average. TTW ask the students what they think the average rainfall in Louisiana is. PROCEDURES/CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT/EXPERIENCES/ACTIVITIES: Instructional Input/Procedures: 1. TTW will ask the students if they remember how rain is formed. (Through the water cycle) 2. TTW will ask students if they know how rain is measured and which cities in Louisiana have the most rainfall. 3. TTW will ask the students if they can think of a term that would represent an accumulation or total of all rainfall throughout the year in Louisiana. (average) Guided Practice/Activity: 1. TTW will explain to the students how to obtain an average from a group of numbers. 2. TTW will ask the students if any of them know how to create a bar graph in excel. 3. TTW will explain what a bar graph is and what it is used for.

4. TTW use the average rainfall of Houston, Texas and Cypress, Texas as an example. The website used to find this information is http://averagerainfall.weatherdb.com/. TTW average the rainfall from winter, spring, summer, and fall of 2013 to find the average rainfall. 5. After finding the average by adding the rainfall of all four months then dividing by four, TTW show the students how to make a bar graph. Independent Practice: 1. TSW break into groups of four to work the assignment. 2. TSW find the average rainfall of four cities in Louisiana of their choice. 3. TSW will use the website http://average-rainfall.weatherdb.com/ to find the average rainfall of each city. By clicking compare under each city, the student can look at the rainfall records side-by-side. 4. TSW will record the rainfall of each season for each city, and then find the average using a calculator. 5. TSW will then insert the averages found and the city name into a document in Excel. 6. TSW will create a column graph using the information found. Closure/Questioning: 1. TSW present as a group their graphs and rainfall averages. 2. TTW ask the students how to find an average 3. TTW ask the students how to make a bar graph Materials: -To find the average rainfall in various cities: http://averagerainfall.weatherdb.com/ -Pen -Paper -Calculator -Excel Accommodations: Behavioral needs will be met by whole group activities and preferential seating. Additional storm related activities will be provided to early finishers. Repeated directions and individual assistance will be provided for academic needs.
