Through missionaries, the Kuleana Act of 1850, the Bayonet Constitution of 1887, and the Anglo-Franco treaty of 1850, we, The Ookoku, believe that the Hawaiian Kingdom was corrupted by outside influences.

MISSIONARIES
While the missionaries gave the native Hawaiians many new and helpful things, they also changed many of their traditions so that they could influence their own traditions.

Foreigners had gave Native Hawaiians a written Hawaiian Language.

Foreigners however had brought diseases that had never came in contact with. -Small pox -Measles

Because of diseases like these, the Hawaiian population was devastated, for they had no immunity.

THE KULEANA ACT OF 1850

Under Kamehameha III, Hawaiis traditional system of land use underwent drastic change, known as the Great Mahele. Land was divided into 23% to the King, 40% divided among 245 chiefs, and 37% was declared government lands to be awarded to commoners who worked the land.

Land Commission and Court of Claims administered land division.

The Kuleana Act of 1850 established fee-simple ownership of land. In order to receive the award, there were specific requirements. However, most of those eligible for the rewards never claimed their land. Privileges and responsibilities of private land ownership were unknown and misunderstood.

THE BAYONET CONSTITUTION OF 1887

Constitution created by members of the Committee of Safety. The Bayonet Constitution was signed by King Kalakaua at gunpoint. Forced by the Honolulu Riflemen, secretly led by the Hawaiian League. Empowered the Legislative Cabinet and other branches of government. The Kings power was heavily reduced and was left as a mere figure-head.

Pearl Harbor granted to the United States.

THE ANGLO-FRANCO TREATY OF 1850

Prime example as to why Hawaii shouldve remained as a sovereignty. Signed on November 28, 1842 The Anglo-Franco Proclamation stated Hawaii was an independent nation.

Drafted by the court of London and the French governments.

Document was agreed to by a plethora of nations: -Denmark -France -Japan -Russia

-Germany
-Great Britain

-United States of America

COUNTER ARGUMENT-THE QUEEN WANTS POWER

The Queen wants to get rid of the Reform Party and the Annexation Club. If the Queen does this, she gains Total Control, and may attempt to overthrow the current Government.

However: The Queen doesnt want total control. Only enough power to do right for native Hawaiians. Improve commoners lives as their ruler. Give back Native Hawaiians voting rights and land ownership.

COUNTER ARGUMENT-HAWAII RECOGNITION DESIRABLE TO AMERICA.

Hawaii was wanted by many countries. Possesses an important strategic Naval Port (Pearl Harbor).

Powerful Sugar Industry.

Hawaiis annexation would allow no restrictions on Hawaiis sugar exports. Strategic location, in which believed that whoever controlled Hawaii controlled the Pacific. (Ex: Spanish-American War) Hawaii defended their land peacefully, but due to Pro-Annexation groups such as the Hawaiian League, Native Hawaiians received fewer and fewer power.
