Dal --1.5 cups yellow or green split peas 1 t sp salt 1 onion .5 green pepper 1 t sp t umeric .5 t sp curry powder 1.5 t sp black must ard seeds juice of 1 lemon Boil t he yellow split peas in 2 cups wat er for about 30 minut es--unt il t hey are t ender but not so long t hat t hey lose t heir shape. They should be rat her dry, like mashed pot at oes, but keep an eye on t hem. You may need t o add a lit t le more wat er along t he way. St ir in salt . While t he peas are cooking chop onion and green pepper. Combine wit h t umeric and curry powder and set aside. Heat up a heavy pan wit h a lid. When it is very hot , add must ard seed and cover. The seeds will pop noisily; shake t he pan during t his process t o make sure t hey don't burn. (Tradit ionally, you do t he seed popping in oil. It works wit hout , but you need t o be ready t o add t he next ingredient s quickly.) When t he sound quiet s down, add t he onion mixt ure and a lit t le wat er for saut e. Saut e unt il onion is t ransparent and golden, and t hen st ir t his mixt ure int o t he peas along wit h t he lemon juice. Serve wit h Chapat is (Indian bread) or over basmat i rice, or what ever creat ive way you feel like doing. Makes about 4 cups. kwvegan vegan
