Demeter and Persephone

The myth of Demeter and Persephone is about Demeter who was in charge of crops. Her job was very important because if she got upset the crops would die. Everyone wanted to keep Demeter happy. What made her happy was her daughter Persephone. Hades, who was the god of the underworld, fell in love with Persephone. Hades kidnapped her and Demeter got very sad. All the crops died. Persephone cried and refused to eat because it was believed that you would live in the underworld forever if you ate there. Persephone finally had to eat so Hades gave her a pomegranate and she ate 6 out of the 12 seeds. Zeus got worried about the crops so he sent Hermes to make a deal with him. The deal was if Persephone would marry Hades she would live as queen of the underworld for six months of the year. Each spring she would return and live on Earth for the other six months. Hades, Persephone, Demeter and Zeus all agreed. Demeter made sure all flowers would bloom to welcome her daughter. When she returned to Hades, Demeter cried and let all the crops die. That makes up the cycle for the crops.
