ORGANIC GARDEN PROVIDES FRESH FOOD FOR STUDENTS JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Oct. 4, 2013- Fresh produce and garden workshops are among the benefits students reap at University of North Floridas Ogier Gardens, the first student-run organic initiative in Florida. The garden produces 50 kinds of fruits and vegetables through organic farming techniques. This is the process of growing produce in a sustainable manner without the use of pesticides. We provide fresh, local and seasonal produce thats harvested by our volunteers, said Kevin Anderson, the garden coordinator. UNF students profit from the garden in a variety of ways. Volunteers keep the food they grow and anyone can attend healthy cooking classes put on by nutrition students. There are many workshops such as, Introduction to Organic Gardening, Composting, Introduction to Permaculture, Whats in My Food and Eat for the Planet. You also benefit from knowing where your food comes from and how it was grown, said Anderson. The gardens main goal is to promote health and wellness among students.
