BUILT UP SECTION

ROLLED SECTION

Built up steel sections are comprised of other smaller members

Rolled sections, which are formed (called rolled) into the shape directly

3 plates welded together to form an I-shape or 2 angles bolted back to back to make a double angle shape

Rolled I, L, C-sections

Welding or punching for bolt holes creates a significant residual stresses in the member

Rolled sections do still contain residual stresses from uneven cooling (flanges and web cool at different rates because of heat/mass transfer)

This residual stress weakens its strength

The residual stress in a rolled shape is much less than that of its built up member counterpart
