on Symbolism that touches on Mockingjay pin as well as showing U.S. flag as a symbol. Bridge from this to using flags as a reinforcing example. Scenario and assignment: You are the ruler of a new country that remains after a cataclysmic world event changed everything. You must design a flag for your people that will represent their history, values, and aspirations to other countries. Choose the elements for your flag, including the colors, shape, and symbols to be used. No more than three symbols should be used. 1. What does your flag look like? You may draw it or write a description. 2. Why did you choose these symbols and colors? Write an explanation of what these symbols and colors help your flag communicate to outsiders. This is an individual activity and will be limited to a 10- to 15minute timeframe. Students will use paper and markers or colored pencils to create flags. Have three students present their flags to the class and explain their symbols. (5-10 minutes) Ask students to open notebooks to definitions of symbol and symbolism and read those aloud again. Hand out a list or chart of symbols from Catching Fire for them to add to their notebooks. They are to take notes on this during their reading. The symbolism in the novel will be an important part of their final projects for their dystopian unit. (5 minutes) In some advanced classes, I will ask the students to do a search on Symbolism and/or Symbolism in Literature and create a list of five Web sites on that topic. They are to submit that on Edmodo for us to access during my technology lesson on evaluating Web sites.
