Transition
As a field in education it has come a long way since its humble beginnings as a domestic skill oriented courses offering inputs in housekeeping, home decoration, cookery, child rearing, stitching etc. Such an education was appropriate in the past since it helped to draw women out of their homes to improve the skills that had been handed down to them by the elderly women in the family.

Economic necessities
Most women work outside the home due to basic economic necessities. In this context, managing and balancing both household and professional life remains essential. Home science education tries to train and educate one to make a perfect interface between these two spheres of women's life.

Education
Many Education boards in India such as NIOS,[1] CBSE, ICSE,[2] CISCE[3] and various state boards offer home science as a subject in their courses.
