MetroPCS Dallas Marathon race course
Spectators, like the runners,
will take in some of Dallas
most scenic venues, including
old and new landmarks while
cheering MetroPCS Dallas
Marathon, half marathon and
relay runners.
Race officials tweaked the
courses, enhancing the experi-
ence for runners and those giv-
ing support from the sidelines.
What follows are choice spots
to root for the runners and cap-
ture the races ambience.
By DEBBIE FETTERMAN
Special Contributor
Thestart: The big-city vibe will
greet onlookers and
participants, who will be lined
up near the intersection of Main
and Market streets,
approximately two blocks east
of Houston Street. In addition
to horseback riders galloping
ahead of the runners to signal
the start, the send-off will
include a sonic boom,
upgraded fireworks, smoke and
confetti. The smoke and
confetti will stream for all three
corrals.
Miles 1-3: TheWest Dallas Loop
will be laced with cheering
stations, musical performances
and spectator activities. Family
and friends can watch from the
Belmont Hotel and Clairevista
Vitality Club on the northeast
corner of Sylvan and Fort
Worth avenues, Rays Sporting
Goods at Sylvan Avenue and
Singleton Boulevard, where a
nine-piece mariachi band will
be stationed. Along with West
Commerce Street, Sylvan and
Singleton will be closed during
the race. Supporters can park
west of Sylvan and walk or
arrive before 7:40 a.m.
Mile 4.6: Bell Design Districts
outdoor amphitheater will be a
festive gathering place. Theres
parking via Market Center
Boulevard and Irving Boulevard
from the north. Oak Lawn
Avenue and Dragon Street will
be closed. Ascension Coffee
will be open, and there will be
food trucks.
Miles 6-7: Spectators can watch
full and half marathoners
northbound on Turtle Creek
Boulevard, and half
marathoners return
southbound on Turtle Creek, in
their eighth mile. Historic
Arlington Hall at Lee Park will
be the epicenter for the
MetroPCS Mile. Its designed to
be a cheering station
extravaganza with a DJ, yard
signs and noise makers.
Mile 10 (for the half) As half
marathoners head toward the
finish, they will pass along the
north side of Klyde Warren Park
from Olive Street to Field Street
north of Woodall Rogers
Freeway. Dallas five-acre urban
deck park will feature food
trucks, restaurants and an
urban green space from which
to cheer.
Mile 10.3(for the full) The
Granada Theater, 3524
Greenville Ave., and the
restaurant next door, Sundown
at the Granada, are popular
spectator hangouts near the
second relay exchange point
(Anita Street at Bremen
Street).
Mile 11.7: Fromthe M Streets, full
marathoners pass Hillside
Village and Lakewood Village
as they make their way to White
Rock Lake. The shopping
centers are packed with
restaurants and open viewing
spaces. Theres also parking.
Just remember that
Mockingbird Lane will have
only one lane open in each
direction, so arrive early and
expect delays.
Mile 17.2: Winfrey Point offers
panoramic views of White Rock
Lake with the downtown
skyline on the horizon. Winfrey
Point is accessible from
Emerald Isle off Garland Road.
There is limited parking at the
top and near the ball diamonds.
Parking is not allowed on the
grass.
Mile 24.5: DeepEllums eclectic
distractions and a couple of
bands will entertain marathoners
late in the race. Main and
Commerce streets will be closed,
but Elm Street will be accessible.
The finish: The finish line will be
at Wood and Griffin Streets
near Pioneer Plaza. Once
runners have passed through
the secured finishers area and
collected their medal,
Gatorade, finishers shirt and
personal gear, the reunion area
will be steps away. A festive,
postrace street party is planned
to celebrate the participants
achievements. It will feature the
Miller64 party trailer and
Live80, an 80s cover band.
Food trucks will encircle the
area, and picnic benches and
seating areas will be available.
For marathoners,
spectators, theres lots
of fun to go around
