Film Scores

Modern Classical Music Creating a Film Score These people play important roles in creating a film score:
_______________ : in charge of all creative aspects of a film, works with the composer to determine what style/tone of music he or she wants _______________ : writes the music for the film _______________ : arranges the music for an ensemble to play, usually an orchestra

Spotting
The composer usually begins working on the score towards the end of production, after filming has taken place. The director and composer watch the unedited version of the film, known as the ______________, and discuss where music is necessary. They also discuss what the director wants the music to sound like. This process is called spotting, and is the first step in creating a film score.

Syncing
During this process, the composer decides how he or she will _______________ moments in the music with moments in the film so that the two line up perfectly in the final movie. The composer must calculate the exact timings and write the music so that it times out perfectly.

Writing
Now that the composer has figured out the style of music needed for the movie, which scenes need music, and how the music needs to time out, then he or she can get started writing the music! Some composers use ________________, while others sit down at a piano and write it all down on paper. The composer usually has about six weeks to write all the music for a movie.

Orchestration
The composer often does not have enough time to write the music and also arrange it for the orchestra. In this case, a separate person known as the _________________ arranges the composers music for the orchestra to play. Some composers tell their orchestrators exactly which instruments to use for each part, while other composers allow the orchestrators more freedom in their orchestrations.

Recording
Now that all of the music is written and arranged, the musicians come to a studio to record the soundtrack. Often the composer conducts the orchestra because he or she knows the music better than anyone else. A large screen behind the orchestra plays the scenes from the movie so that the ______________ can make sure the music lines up perfectly.
