Digital Story Lesson Plan Lesson Plan Title: All About Jersey City, New Jersey

NJCCCS Standards Addressed:

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.8.6 Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing and present the relationships between information and ideas efficiently as well as to interact and collaborate with others. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.8.8 Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources, using search terms effectively; assess the credibility and accuracy of each source; and quote or paraphrase the data and conclusions of others while avoiding plagiarism and following a standard format for citation. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.8.5 Integrate multimedia and visual displays into presentations to clarify information, strengthen claims and evidence, and add interest. General Goals: Use books and the internet to research important facts about Jersey City, NJ Plan a digital story using a storyboard to enhance technology skills & knowledge. Record a digital story giving a detailed recount of important information about Jersey City.

Specific Objectives: Students will be able to create a digital story that clearly tells about Jersey City, New Jersey. Develop social and technology skills by working in groups to create a digital story. Students will be able to write an individual reflection after they complete their digital story.

Required Materials: City of Jersey City website Computer /Laptop with internet connection Photostory3 and/or Moviemaker software Pictures of Jersey City for students to use

Anticipatory Set (Lead-In): Teacher will show students a video clip about Jersey City at the beginning of the lesson: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_vKq93KylmY Class will discuss important facts about Jersey City that should be included in their digital story.

Step-By-Step Procedures: After the anticipatory set, the teacher will review the concepts learned about Digital storytelling is introduced to the class and the details of the project will be presented to students. Class will be divided into small groups by the teacher. The teacher will model exactly what is expected of the students using the sample project created. Students will begin working on their digital story using the teachers model as a guide. Students will complete the following checkpoints: Storyboard Narrative Script Digital Story References Individual Reflection Paragraph

Plan for Independent Practice: The teacher will divide students into groups. Each group will be given a planning sheet where they will record their important fact about Jersey City. A storyboard will be created on www.storyboardthat.com Created story boards will be used to develop digital stories using Photostory3 or Moviemaker. All digital stories will be at least 2 minutes in length.

Closure (Reflect Anticipatory Set): Students will be broken into new groups to discuss each of their facts. They will listen to see how stories are similar or different.

Assessment Based on Objectives: Digital stories will be presented and scored based on: o Storyboard o Digital Story o Participation o Individual Reflection

Adaptations (Students with Learning Disabilities): Modifications will be made as necessary to differentiate instruction Additional time

Possible Connections to Other Subjects: Language Arts is involved in the writing and speaking, as well as, the individual reflection paragraph
