Teacher Work Sample 6 Analysis of Student Learning-Unit

Assessments are an important factor of unit planning and maintain a scheduled pace. Assessments are used to monitor students success throughout a unit or nine weeks. Data was collected from the middle level class of twenty one students. I chose to collect data throughout the multiplication unit from the middle level class because of the range of test scores and previous unit grades. The class size allows me to track progress from numerous students and collect sufficient evidence. The high level students class average is an A and evidence would not have sufficient to see a large improvement. The low level students were monitored but because of the low amount of students the class average varies between different assessment types. The assessment scores provided below follow along with the multiplication unit assessments. Additional assessments information can be found in teacher work sample number four, assessment plan.

Whole Class
Pre-Assessment: The pre-assessment contained four sections which held different amounts of questions. The assessment included vocabulary, multiplication, and rounding. The students received a score out of four to determine their prior knowledge of each section on the preassessment. The pre-assessment was information the students should be familiar with because the content is a third and fourth grade standard. The pre-assessment will help determine who needs additional time spent on multiplication fundamentals before continuing to more challenging content. It shows that 20%, 4 students did not pass the pre-assessment and that 80%, 17 students passed. The passing scores ranged between 80 to 100 and shows room for improvement. I was pleased with the overall scores of the pre-assessment and felt it gave me a general idea of the students prior knowledge.

During Assessment (Formative Assessments):

1. Basic Facts Review: The first assessment completed during the unit was a timed multiplication test. The students were given five minutes to complete 100 basic multiplication facts. The quiz provided evidence of which students needed additional practice with multiplication. The quiz was taken only in the lower and middle level class. The higher class did not have to take the timed multiplication test. During computer lab the students complete timed test weekly to practice skills and the students scores showed they did not need to complete additional time multiplication test. The lower classs initial timed test scores showed they needed additional practice and took the timed test everyday for the first two weeks of the unit. The middle level class continued to retest for the first week of the unit. This allowed the students to continue to view the multiplication facts. The results were surprising lower than I thought they should have been. The students have been learning basic multiplication facts since the third grade and this should be review material. Throughout the unit I did see improvement with students multiplication. The results showed that 10%, 2 students failed the timed multiplication test and 90%, 19 students passed. The results varied but majority of the grades were placed around 80%.

The students completed the assessment during individual work. Two days before the students took their mid unit test they were asked to complete one page from their books. The formative assessment allowed me to determine what to spend a large amount of time on during the test review. The students received a check or x for completion and participation. The assessment allowed me to see areas from the unit that needed to be highlighted during the unit review. The results show that two students were absent and 10%, 2 students did not complete to attempt the class work and 90% of the students completed their work.

3. Mid Unit Test:

The third mid unit assessment that data was collected from was the students mid-unit test. The students mid unit test allowed the information from the chapter (unit) to be broken apart. This will help the students focus less content at one time. The mid unit test focuses on multiplication properties, real world word problems, multiplication, estimating and vocabulary. The mid unit test held a total of 20 questions and each question is worth 5 point. From the results 5% of the students failed and 95% of the students passed. Even though almost all the class passed the test the scores were border line pass fail. The scores reflect the students test grade without any extra credit. I wanted sufficient evidence from the unit and not from previous unit material.

4. Quiz:
The students completed the multiplication two-digit by two-digit numbers as an additional grade as well as additional practice before the summative assessment. The assessment held eight multiplication problems which were completed during thirty minutes of class. The assessment showed the students understanding of complex multiplication which had been practice for numerous days previously. The students who needed to practice their multiplication tables struggled with this assessment but a majority of the grades were decent. From the results 5% of the students failed and 95% of the students passed. The scores were again border line pass fail but overall the class showed improvement.

Post Assessment: Summative:

The students completed an end of unit assessment which reviewed vocabulary, multiplication, and real world word problems. The unit test included 20 questions and 5 extra credit questions. The scores shown do not reflect the extra credit but the score out of 100. The extra credit required the students to think back to the previous unit test. From the results 0% of the class had a failing scores while 100% had passing scores. I was very pleased that none of the students failed the test and made me feel like the unit was a success.

Individual Students
Student One:
Student number one showed a large improvement throughout the unit. The students score increased from each assessment. The students progress throughout the unit showed that he maintained a steady B to C grade average. The student was placed in the lower level group to allow for more one on one time and accommodations. The student was given additional accommodations after viewing the students work which I believe is what made such a difference in the assessment scores. The student required accommodations that allowed him have more visual control of the material presented. The students progress continued after the unit because of his accommodations.

Student number twos progress throughout the unit showed that the student had room for improvement. The students grade maintained an A to B average. When noticing the students grades were lowering the student was moved near a student that held good discussions and maintained an A average. After moving student number two and allowing him to participate in peer discussion the students grades improved throughout the unit. From the results it shows that the students grade maintained steady pace and only had one assessment that made his overall average suffer. The students scores could be higher if the students continued to put effort towards his studies and homework.
