Number of cars doubled in 1970s. Were more popular as they became cheaper and petrol was easily affordable as well as how there was not much traffic.
However in mid 1970s with the world oil crisis petrol prices rose so popularity of cars decreased. To fix this environmental design rules were set out to make newer cars more environmentally sustainable.
