Lesson # 5

Grade: 3rd Grade Ancient Greece

I.

Objectives Students will be able to explain the contribution Greece gave to sports. SOL 3.1 The student will explain how the contributions of ancient Greece have influenced the present world in terms of architecture, government (direct democracy), and sports. Math SOL 3.9 The students will estimate and use U.S. Customary and metrics to measure a.) Length to the nearest inch, foot, yard, centimeter, and meter. Essential Questions Who gave us the Olympic Games? How do a measure length? Materials for Learning Activity Pictures of the Olympic games Rulers Cotton Balls Tape Spoons Yard Sticks Mini Frisbees Recording Worksheet ( One per student Procedure for Learning Activity Introduction ( 10 min., Whole Group) - Teacher will start the lesson by asking the students if anyone had ever watched the Olympics on T.V.? Students will raise their hands and the teacher will then ask, What sports do you like to watch on the Olympics? - Teacher will then ask: Does anyone know where the Olympics came from or who created hem? Students will guess.

The ancient Greeks were the ones who created the Olympic Games many years ago and we still have them today. - Teacher will talk about the different sports that use to be played at the Olympics such as: footraces, shot-put, boxing, horse races, wrestling, disc-throwing, fencing, long-jump, chariot races and many more. Activity ( 45 min., Small Groups) - Following discussion, the teacher will announce that the class will have their own Olympics where they will play some games. The teacher will split the class into 5 even groups. - Different stations around the room and possibly in the hall will be set up with a different game at each: a.) Center 1: Shot-Put- Students will have cotton balls and will have to see how far they can throw them. First they will throw it with their hands. Next, they will use a spoon to sling it and will see how far that goes. They will have to record using a inches ruler and record onto their worksheet. b.) Center 2: Sprint- Pieces of tape will mark the start and finish. Students will go one at a time and run to the other piece of tape as fast as they can. One student will use a stop watch to see how long it takes them to run. Students will record their time on their worksheet. c.) Center 3: Long-Jump- Tape will mark the starting line. Each student will just as far as they can and record their jump with a yard stick. Record answer on worksheet. d.) Center 4: Disc Throw- At this station mini Frisbees will be used. This is good to do in the hallway. The students will take turns throwing the Frisbee and seeing how far theirs went. The students will then measure using a ruler and record their answer on their worksheet. - Each group will be at each center for about 10 minutes. They will need to record at each station on their worksheet so they can turn it in to the teacher. Closing ( 5 min. Whole Group) - Teacher will ask the students which center was their favorite. They will just do a share out. Assessment Observation- The only assessment for the activity is observation during the mini Olympics and the discussion in the beginning of the lesson. Differentiation -

Advanced Learners- I could have them measure using a different unit of measurement then the other students. They could use centimeters have to do equivalencies of their units. Special Needs Learners- For those that are in a wheelchair, they are able to play the shot-put and disc-throwing. They could also be the one that records the time for the foot race. For the foot race they could do that race in their actual wheelchair. Bodily Kinesthetic Learners- this whole lesson is moving around so it is perfect for kinesthetic learners. Visual Learners- Pictures in the beginning were shown of the Olympics Technology Integration Smart Board- Used to show pictures of the Olympics to the class in beginning of lesson.
